The Conservation of Biodiversity in the Central Zagros Landscape Conservation Zone Project aims to demonstrate biodiversity mainstreaming at the local level in eight pilot villages across the zone and to establish mechanisms for facilitating the dissemination and replication of successful village approaches.
Criteria for Selection of the Pilot Villages
1. Excessive population of free grazing livestock;
2. Location of the village in relation to the protected areas (within/outside or in the vicinity of the protected area);
3. Over exploitation of wood for rural construction and fuel by villagers;
4. Economic dependency of the village dwellers on medicinal, resins and nutritional plants and fodders
5. Unsustainable rain fed cultivation agriculture, land conversion and cultivation on high slope lands;
6. Over hunting and over fishing activities;
7. Population of the village (50‐100 families);
8. The village potentiality for project implementation and the level
and type of potential resources for economic development. Existence of
appropriate lands or facilities in nearby areas;
9. Unemployment rate, availability of job opportunities in the village or its surrounding;
10. Poverty level;
11. Lack of infrastructure (gas, electricity, phone line, culinary water supply network, etc.);
12. The level of public readiness to be involved in the project activities;
13. The level of cooperation of the village authorities;
14. The level of literacy of the villagers;
15. The level of sanitation facilities available in the village;
16. Access to road and transportation systems.
